US: End Abortion Ban for Military Women - AlertNet

The only thing I would add is that the ban should be repealed not just on abortions in the case of rape, but in all cases. Abortion is still legal in the U.S., and the Army is supposedly under the jurisdiction of all U.S. laws. Ergo, women in the military should have access to abortion — without limitation — in the same degree as all other matters concerning their health.

The US government should allow US servicewomen who are rape survivors to make their own decisions about their pregnancies. On May 24, 2012, the US Senate Armed Services Committee will consider a proposal under a military funding bill that would end the ban on military insurance coverage for abortion in cases of rape and incest.

“It is outrageous that US servicewomen enduring sexual assault while serving their country are also kept from making decisions about their pregnancies,” said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Senate has an opportunity to end this double injustice by revoking the health insurance ban on abortions in cases of rape.”

US law prohibits the armed forces from providing health coverage for abortion except in cases in which the life of the pregnant woman is in danger. This policy diverges from other federal health insurance programs such as Medicaid, which include exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape and incest.

In 2010, 166,729 women were serving as active duty enlisted personnel in the US military, while 35,341 served as commissioned officers. The military estimates that 19,000 sexual assaults of military personnel occur each year in total, including rape as well as other types of sexual assault. Defense Department records indicate that 3,192 sexual assaults were reported in 2011, but the department estimates that only 15 percent of assaults are reported.

We let Willow cut her hair. When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world. She can’t cut my hair but that’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body. So when she goes out into the world, she’s going out with a command that it is hers. She is used to making those decisions herself. We try to keep giving them those decisions until they can hold the full weight of their lives.

Just waiting for the time when this stops becoming relevant.

This Tumblr page will expose the Hunger Games fans on Twitter who dare to call themselves fans yet don’t know a damn thing about the books.

And my father keeps trying to tell me racism isn’t a problem.

Please read this foolery…

This is why I generally stay the hell away from fandoms. How the FUCK can you call yourself a fan and NOT FUCKING KNOW THAT RUE AND THRESH ARE NOT FUCKING WHITE?! IT’S CLEARLY STATED IN THE FUCKING BOOKS THAT THEY ARE NOT WHITE!

Did they not even read the character descriptions? Jesus god.

I am so disgusted. Even if the book hadn’t specifically said the characters were black, why do they care if the characters are black in the movie, and why do they think that’s a bad thing? I for one am tired of seeing so little diversity in the cinemas, and am always glad when the cast is even slightly diverse.

Anyone who thinks we are living in a post-racist society needs to wake up, bad.
